The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board during the Policy Meeting held today, Tuesday, August 31, cancelled general JAMB cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Schools to Set Cut-Off Marks

Following the cancellation of general cut-off marks, universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria are free to set their individual minimum cutoff marks for admission.

According to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, different universities proposed different cutoff marks. For example, Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto proposed 140, the University of Maiduguri proposed 150, Bayero University Kano 180, Lagos State University 190, Covenant University 190, University of Lagos 200, Pan Atlantic University proposed 210, etc.

We expect that the cutoff marks will vary with schools, depending on factors such as how many applicants the school gets.

Deadline for Admissions

No definitive date was fixed as deadline for schools to complete their admissions but the the board is considering December 31, 2021, deadline for all private institutions and January 31st 2022 for all public institutions.

Admission Procedure

The procedure for admission remains similar to what it is currently:

  • the candidate’s credentials must be uploaded on JAMB CAPS and recommended by the institution
  • JAMB approves
  • the candidate accepts or rejects the offer of admission
  • if candidates have not accepted an offer, the institution can change the candidate after informing JAMB
  • every institution is at liberty to admit candidates based on its own minimum score approved by the institution and the policy meeting
  • admissions will be conducted only through CAPS
  • no institution is allowed to admit candidates without uploading their details on CAPS

Do you think cancellation of general cutoff mark and allowing schools to set their own cutoff marks will make admission easier for students? Let's know your thoughts in the comment box below.
