WAEC deploys new software to catch cheaters & curb malpractices

Are the days of "WAEC runs" or "expo" (exam malpractice during WAEC) over? Will the new solution make this possible?
WAEC announced the new electronic means it has deployed in its efforts to curb exam malpractice that seems to be rampant during West African Examinations Council exams.
  • why is this necessary?
  • what if the software makes mistakes?

Why is this necessary?

The usual practice is that WAEC sends its agents to different centers during the exams. However, given the number of WAEC centers across the country, it is impossible to have the agents at all the centers let alone having them there throughout the duration of the exams. The new software is mainly focused on objective questions. Here is the way they explained it:
"WAEC through its commitment to combatting examination malpractice, consistent innovation, deployment of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in its operations, has deployed a software application for detecting cases of collusion (malpractice) among candidates during the conduct of Objective tests." "The new technological solution is capable of detecting most of the collusion cases that take place during the conduct of objective tests in WASSC examinations, and to report on the candidates who were implicated, using the charge sheets, that are electronically generated by the computer." "Candidates and other stakeholders are hereby informed about this new development so that they would be advised to desist from examination malpractice forthwith because ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse for any reported breach. Please be guided accordingly."

How accurate is this software?

The board did not go ahead to leak the internal workings of the software or whether it has a 100% reliability or otherwise. While I think this is a step in the right direction, I also hope this solution is tested and trusted to avoid the implication of innocent candidates by the software. via: registration.waecdirect.org/IDP.pdf
