Applications of Structures in Everyday Life - JSS2 Basic technology Lesson Note

  • Buildings: Structures provide the framework for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, ensuring they are safe, stable, and functional. Frame structures are commonly used for their flexibility in design and construction.
  • Bridges: Bridges use frame and composite structures to span gaps and support the weight of traffic and pedestrians. Examples include steel truss bridges and reinforced concrete bridges.
  • Vehicles: The frames of cars, buses, and aeroplanes are carefully designed to provide strength and stability while minimising weight. Composite materials are frequently used to enhance performance and durability.
  • Sports Arenas and Domes: Shell structures are often used in the construction of large-span roofs for sports arenas, exhibition halls, and theatres, providing wide, open spaces without internal columns.
  • Storage Tanks and Silos: Shell structures are also used for liquid storage tanks and silos due to their ability to efficiently contain and support large volumes of material.
