Collection of Like Terms - JSS1 Mathematics Lesson Note

Collecting like terms involves combining terms that have the same variable part. This simplifies the expression, making it easier to work with.

Examples:

Simplify 4𝑥+3𝑥−2𝑥:

Combine the 𝑥 terms.

4𝑥+3𝑥−2𝑥=(4+3−2)𝑥=5𝑥.

Simplify 5𝑎+2𝑏−3𝑎+4𝑏:

Combine the 𝑎 terms and the 𝑏 terms separately.

5𝑎−3𝑎=2𝑎 and 2𝑏+4𝑏=6𝑏.

The result is 2𝑎+6𝑏.

Simplify 7𝑚2+4𝑚−2𝑚2+3𝑚:

Combine the 𝑚2 terms and the 𝑚 terms separately.

7𝑚2−2𝑚2=5𝑚2  and 4𝑚+3𝑚=7𝑚.

The result is 5𝑚2+7𝑚.
