Collection of Like Terms - JSS1 Mathematics Lesson Note

Collecting like terms involves combining terms that have the same variable part. This simplifies the expression, making it easier to work with.

Examples:

Simplify 4π‘₯+3π‘₯βˆ’2π‘₯:

Combine the π‘₯ terms.

4π‘₯+3π‘₯βˆ’2π‘₯=(4+3βˆ’2)π‘₯=5π‘₯.

Simplify 5π‘Ž+2π‘βˆ’3π‘Ž+4𝑏:

Combine the π‘Ž terms and the 𝑏 terms separately.

5π‘Žβˆ’3π‘Ž=2π‘Ž and 2𝑏+4𝑏=6𝑏.

The result is 2π‘Ž+6𝑏.

Simplify 7π‘š2+4π‘šβˆ’2π‘š2+3π‘š:

Combine the π‘š2 terms and the π‘š terms separately.

7π‘š2βˆ’2π‘š2=5π‘š2  and 4π‘š+3π‘š=7π‘š.

The result is 5π‘š2+7π‘š.
