Direct and Inverse Proportion - JSS3 Mathematics Lesson Note
Direct Proportion: Two quantities are in direct proportion if increasing one increases the other at a constant rate. Mathematically, π¦βπ₯ or π¦=ππ₯, where π is a constant.
Example 1: If 5 pens cost $10, how much do 8 pens cost?
Find the cost per pen:Β
10/5 = 2 dollars per pen.
Cost of 8 pens:Β
8Γ2=16 dollars.
Β
Inverse Proportion: Two quantities are in inverse proportion if increasing one decreases the other at a constant rate. Mathematically, π¦β1π₯ Β or π¦=ππ₯.
Example 2: If 5 workers can complete a task in 10 days, how many days will it take for 10 workers to complete the same task?
Use inverse proportion:Β
5Γ10 =10Γπ
Solve forΒ
π: π=50/10 =5 days.
