Expansion of Algebraic Expressions - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note

Expansion of algebraic expressions involves removing the brackets by multiplying each term inside the bracket by the term outside.

Examples:

Example 1: 3(๐‘Ž+2)

Expand by distributing 3 to both ๐‘Ž and 2:

3x๐‘Ž+3x2=3๐‘Ž+6

Example 2: (๐‘ฅ+3)(๐‘ฅ+4)

Apply the distributive property (FOIL method: First, Outer, Inner, Last):

๐‘ฅ x ๐‘ฅ + ๐‘ฅ x 4 + 3 x ๐‘ฅ+ 3 x 4

= ๐‘ฅ2+4๐‘ฅ+3๐‘ฅ+12

=๐‘ฅ2+7๐‘ฅ+12
