Expansion of Algebraic Expressions - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note
Expansion of algebraic expressions involves removing the brackets by multiplying each term inside the bracket by the term outside.
Examples:
Example 1: 3(๐+2)
Expand by distributing 3 to both ๐ and 2:
3x๐+3x2=3๐+6
Example 2: (๐ฅ+3)(๐ฅ+4)
Apply the distributive property (FOIL method: First, Outer, Inner, Last):
๐ฅ x ๐ฅ + ๐ฅ x 4 + 3 x ๐ฅ+ 3 x 4
= ๐ฅ2+4๐ฅ+3๐ฅ+12
=๐ฅ2+7๐ฅ+12
