Expansion of Algebraic Expressions - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note
Expansion of algebraic expressions involves removing the brackets by multiplying each term inside the bracket by the term outside.
Examples:
Example 1: 3(π+2)
Expand by distributing 3 to both π and 2:
3xπ+3x2=3π+6
Β
Example 2: (π₯+3)(π₯+4)
Apply the distributive property (FOIL method: First, Outer, Inner, Last):
π₯ x π₯ + π₯ x 4 + 3 x π₯+ 3 x 4
= π₯2+4π₯+3π₯+12
=π₯2+7π₯+12
