Expansion of Algebraic Expressions - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note

Expansion of algebraic expressions involves removing the brackets by multiplying each term inside the bracket by the term outside.

Examples:

Example 1: 3(π‘Ž+2)

Expand by distributing 3 to both π‘Ž and 2:

3xπ‘Ž+3x2=3π‘Ž+6

Β

Example 2: (π‘₯+3)(π‘₯+4)

Apply the distributive property (FOIL method: First, Outer, Inner, Last):

π‘₯ x π‘₯ + π‘₯ x 4 + 3 x π‘₯+ 3 x 4

= π‘₯2+4π‘₯+3π‘₯+12

=π‘₯2+7π‘₯+12
