Elements of Poetry

Imagery: The use of vivid and evocative language to create sensory impressions.
Figurative language: The use of non-literal language to create meaning, such as simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and understatement.
Sound devices: The use of patterns of sound to create effects, such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, and rhythm.
Structure: The way in which a poem is organized, such as its line length, stanza form, and rhyme scheme.
Tone: The poet's attitude towards the subject of the poem.
Theme: The central message or idea of the poem.


Types of Poetry

Lyric poetry: Poetry that expresses the poet's personal thoughts and feelings.

Dramatic poetry: Poetry that is written in the form of a play.
Approaches to Poetry

Close reading: A careful and detailed examination of a poem.
Formalist approach: An approach that focuses on the structure and elements of a poem.
Biographical approach: An approach that considers the poet's life and experiences in relation to their work.
Historical approach: An approach that considers the social, cultural, and historical context in which a poem was written.
