Household arithmetic - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note
Household arithmetic refers to the mathematical operations used in everyday home activities. This includes tasks like budgeting, cooking, and shopping. Here are a few examples:
Example 1: Budgeting
Suppose you have a monthly income of $3,000 and you want to allocate it to various expenses.
Rent: $1,000
Groceries: $400
Utilities: $150
Transportation: $200
Entertainment: $100
Savings: $250
Calculations:
Total expenses=Rent+ Groceries+ Utilities+ Transportation+ Entertainment+ Savings
=1000+400+150+200+100+250=2100
Remaining amount=Income−Total expenses=3000−2100=900
You have $900 remaining for other needs or unexpected expenses.
Example 2: Cooking
A recipe requires 3/4 cup of sugar, but you want to make a batch that is twice as large.
Calculations:
Sugar needed:=2×¾=2×0.75=1.5 cups
You will need 1.5 cups of sugar.
Example 3: Shopping
You buy 3 items that cost $15, $20, and $12. You want to know the total cost and how much change you'll get from $50.
Calculations:
Total cost=15+20+12=47
Change=50−47=3
You will spend $47 and get $3 back in change.
