Identifying Simple Equation in One Variable - JSS1 Mathematics Lesson Note

A simple equation in one variable is an algebraic statement that equates two expressions involving a single variable. The general form of a simple equation in one variable is:

𝑎𝑥+𝑏=0

where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are constants, and 𝑥 is the variable.

To identify a simple equation in one variable:

It must involve only one variable (typically denoted as 𝑥, 𝑦,𝑡, etc.).

It should have an equal sign (=) that equates two expressions.

The variable should not appear in any other terms apart from the left and right-hand sides of the equation.

Example:

3𝑥−5=10

In this example, 3𝑥−5 and 10 are the two expressions being equated, and 𝑥 is the variable.
