Importance of constitutionalism - SS1 Government Lesson Note

Constitutionalism is important because it provides a set of rules and principles that guide the behavior of governments, and help ensure that citizens' rights and freedoms are protected. Some reasons why constitutionalism is important include:

·         It limits government power: A constitution sets out the powers and limitations of the government. This helps prevent abuses of power by the government, and ensures that it operates within the bounds of the law.

·         It protects individual rights and freedoms: A constitution outlines the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, such as freedom of speech, religion, and association. Constitutionalism ensures that these rights are protected and that the government cannot infringe upon them.

·         It ensures the rule of law: Constitutionalism requires that the government operates under the rule of law, meaning that laws are enforced fairly and consistently, and that no one is above the law.

·         It establishes a system of checks and balances: Constitutionalism creates a system of checks and balances among the different branches of government, such as the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, to ensure that no single branch becomes too powerful.

·         It promotes stability and continuity: A constitution provides a stable framework for governance, which helps ensure that there is continuity in government policies and institutions, even as governments change.
