Constitutionalism refers to the principles and practices that are based on a written constitution which outlines the powers, limitations, and functions of the government, and the rights and freedoms of the citizens.

Functions of constitutionalism

The key functions of constitutionalism include:

·         Limiting government power: Constitutionalism is designed to prevent the government from becoming too powerful and abusing its authority. This is achieved by setting limits on the powers of the government and ensuring that it operates within the boundaries set by the constitution.

·         Protecting individual rights and freedoms: A constitution outlines the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, such as freedom of speech, religion, and association. Constitutionalism ensures that these rights are protected and that the government cannot infringe upon them.

·         Ensuring the rule of law: Constitutionalism requires that the government operates under the rule of law, meaning that laws are enforced fairly and consistently, and that no one is above the law.

·         Establishing a system of checks and balances: Constitutionalism creates a system of checks and balances among the different branches of government, such as the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, to ensure that no single branch becomes too powerful.
