Properties and Uses of Metals - SS2 Chemistry Lesson Note

Metals are a class of elements characterised by their shiny appearance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, malleability, and ductility. These properties make metals highly valuable and versatile materials in various industries.

Physical Properties of Metals:

Metals possess several distinct physical properties that contribute to their widespread use:

     Metallic Lustre: Metals have a characteristic shiny appearance due to their ability to reflect light.

     Conductivity: Metals are excellent conductors of heat and electricity. They allow the efficient transfer of thermal and electrical energy.

     Malleability: Metals can be hammered or rolled into thin sheets without breaking. They exhibit plastic deformation under pressure.

     Ductility: Metals can be drawn into thin wires without breaking. They can be stretched into different shapes.

     High Melting and Boiling Points: Metals generally have high melting and boiling points, allowing them to withstand high temperatures.

Chemical Properties of Metals:

     Electrical and Electronics: Metals like copper and aluminium are widely used in electrical wiring and conductors due to their excellent electrical conductivity. They are also essential in the production of electronic components and circuitry.

     Manufacturing and Machinery: Metals serve as key materials in manufacturing processes and the production of machinery and equipment. Steel, iron, and alloys are extensively used in manufacturing sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and machinery industries.

     Packaging and Containers: Metals, particularly aluminium and tin, are used for packaging food and beverages due to their durability, malleability, and ability to provide a barrier against moisture, light, and oxygen.

     Medical and Biomedical Applications: Metals, including titanium and stainless steel, find application in medical implants, prosthetics, surgical instruments, and diagnostic tools due to their biocompatibility, strength, and resistance to corrosion.

Metals possess unique physical and chemical properties that make them valuable and versatile materials in various industries.
