Introduction to Diphthongs
What are Diphthongs?
- Diphthongs are special vowel sounds made by combining two vowel sounds within the same syllable.
- Unlike pure vowels, which are single, steady sounds, diphthongs glide from one vowel position to another within the same syllable.
We have eight (8) diphthongs: /ei/, /eu/, /ia/, /ea/,/ai/, /aʊ/, / oʊ/ and /ɔɪ/
The following are the various examples of words that have these speech sounds in them.
Examples of Diphthongs:
-/aɪ/ (as in "price"): This diphthong starts as the sound of "ah" and glides to the sound of "ee." Try saying "ah-ee" quickly, and you'll hear the diphthong "aɪ."
- /eɪ/ (as in "play"):This diphthong starts with the sound of "eh" and glides to the sound of "ee."
- /ɔɪ/ (as in "boy"): This diphthong starts with the sound of "aw" and glides to the sound of "ee."
- /aʊ/ (as in "house"): This diphthong starts with the sound of "ah" and glides to the sound of "oo."
-/oʊ/ (as in "boat"): This diphthong starts with the sound of "oh" and glides to the sound of "oo."
