The development of communication in Nigeria has seen significant progress over the years, transforming the way people connect and share information across the country.

·         Early Years: In the past, communication in Nigeria relied mainly on traditional methods such as face-to-face conversations, storytelling, drum beats, smoke signals, and messenger runners. These methods were limited in reach and speed.

·         Postal Services: The introduction of postal services in Nigeria brought a new level of communication in the late 19th century. Letters and parcels could be sent and received over long distances, although it was a relatively slow process.

·         Telecommunication: The advent of telecommunication revolutionized communication in Nigeria. The Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) was established in the 1960s, offering landline telephone services. However, these services were limited in coverage and accessibility.

Mobile phones quickly became widely available and affordable, leading to a rapid increase in connectivity across the country.

Internet service providers (ISPs) started offering dial-up connections, which later transitioned to more advanced broadband connections. This allowed people to access information, communicate via email, and engage in social media platforms.

·         Digital Technologies: The proliferation of smartphones and the rise of digital technologies further enhanced communication in Nigeria. Mobile internet usage surged, enabling people to access a wide range of services, including social media, online banking, e-commerce, and instant messaging applications.

·         Social Media and Messaging Apps: Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have gained immense popularity in Nigeria. These platforms have become vital tools for communication, allowing people to share news, opinions, and stay connected with friends and family.

·         Internet Penetration: Nigeria has witnessed significant growth in internet penetration over the years. The expansion of telecommunications infrastructure, the laying of undersea fiber-optic cables, and the increasing availability of affordable smartphones have contributed to improved internet access in both urban and rural areas.

·         E-Government and E-Services: The Nigerian government has embraced e-governance initiatives to enhance communication and service delivery. Online portals and platforms have been established to facilitate government transactions, such as tax payments, vehicle registrations, and passport applications, making communication with government agencies more efficient.
