Types of Party system - SS1 Government Lesson Note
There are generally three types of party systems:
- · One-party system: This is when only one political party is allowed to exist in a society. One-party systems are typically found in authoritarian regimes, where opposition parties are not allowed to compete for power.
- · Two-party system: This is when two major political parties dominate the political landscape and compete for power. In a two-party system, smaller parties may exist, but they are not usually able to compete effectively for power.
- · Multi-party system: This is when several parties compete for power, often leading to coalition governments. In a multi-party system, smaller parties may have a greater chance of gaining power and influencing policy.
