Define Discipleship

Discipleship is a walking together in the way of Christ, learning to die, learning how to leave who you were, and learning who you now are. Learning to follow Jesus, becoming his disciple, means walking alongside someone further in the Christian faith for a significant period.

Discuss the calling of the disciples/apostles

1. Simon Peter and Andrew:

Location: By the Sea of Galilee

Account: Jesus saw Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. He said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people." Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him (Matthew 4:18-20).

2. James and John:

Location: Also by the Sea of Galilee

Account: Going on from there, Jesus saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat with their father, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him (Matthew 4:21-22).

3. Matthew (Levi):

Location: At a tax collector’s booth

Account: As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him (Matthew 9:9).

4. Philip and Nathanael:

Account: Jesus found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Philip then found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael was initially skeptical but followed Philip to meet Jesus, who then revealed His knowledge of Nathanael’s character, leading him to believe (John 1:43-51).

5. Other Disciples:

Names: The twelve disciples included Simon Peter, Andrew, James the son of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew (Nathanael), Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus (Judas, son of James), Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot.

Account: Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to Him those He wanted, and they came to Him. He appointed twelve that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons (Mark 3:13-19).
