During the military regimes of Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, General Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, General Obasanjo, and Major General Muhammadu Buhari, the Supreme Military Council (SMC) functioned as the top highest organ of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
In 1966, the administration of Aguiyi Ironsi instituted the SMC and empowered it through statute 8 of decree 1. However, in 1985, President Ibrahim Babangida replaced the SMC as the highest body in a military regime by creating the Armed Forces Ruling Council.
