Scholarship Value/Inclusions/Duration

The value of the Award is commensurate to your documented financial need and is adequate to pay living expenses and tuition fees for your degree of study.

The Award may be extended for up to three further years of undergraduate study or until you complete your degree, whichever comes first, providing you maintain good academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need, and keep your Canadian study permit (student visa).

For you to be considered for the International Leader of Tomorrow Award, you:

  • must be transferring from a recognized secondary school or joining UBC after completing your first year at a post-secondary college or other university.

Application Instructions

To apply for the International Scholars program, you must be recommended by your school or non-profit and provide an academic referee reference. Confirm that your school or non-profit can nominate you, and notify your nominator and academic referee that you want to apply for the International Scholars Program.

Submit your grant application and the online admissions application to UBC before December 1, 2021. Also, it is expected that by 1 February 2022, you must have met the UBC English Language Admission Requirement.

PhD Scholarships In Canada For International Students

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established to attract and keep world-class PhD candidates while also establishing Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education. The grants are for doctorate studies (or for a combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).

Nominations for a Vanier CGS are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international citizens.

The deadline for applications for the scholarship is 1st of November, 2021, while students are expected to resume in September, 2022.

Host Institution(s) For The Vanier CGS

Universities in Canada that have received Vanier CGS funding. The Vanier CGS is only available at the qualified Canadian institution that filed the nomination.

Level/Field(s) of Study

PhD programs in health research, natural sciences and/or engineering research, and social sciences and/or humanities research (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).

As a requirement for program completion, an eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, recital, performance, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.

Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) and clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also suitable if they contain a strong autonomous research component, as indicated above.

Number of Scholarships

The institute awards up to 166 scholarships annually.

Scholarship Value/Duration

The scholarships are valued $50,000 each year and span three years.

Eligibility

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:

• have a nomination by only one Canadian institution that has received a Vanier CGS quota; and

• be in pursuit of your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding:

• plan to undertake full-time doctorate (or a dual graduate program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) study and research at the nominated institution in the summer semester or academic year after the release of results;

• be through with no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2022.

• not have completed more than 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by 1 May 2022 if you are enrolled in a joint graduate research program, such as MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window regardless of whether they were previously enrolled in a Master's program; or accelerated directly from a Bachelor's to a PhD (no time spent in a Master's program); or accelerated from a Master's degree into a Doctoral program without first obtaining a Master's degree.

• have earned a first-class grade point average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and

• not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship/fellowship from NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC to undertake or conclude a doctoral degree.

Application Instructions

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has a quota for the program in which they wish to study. Candidates cannot apply to the Vanier CGS program directly.

There are two methods to start an application. Either the student tells the graduate studies faculty of the chosen school of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program, or the institution begins the nomination procedure by contacting the preferred applicant.

The student prepares the application and submits it to the nominating institution by their internal deadline via the ResearchNet application system. After that, the nominating institution sends suggested nominees to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by 2 November 2021.

You are expected to visit the official website to access the application form and to gather extensive information on how to apply for this scholarship.

Conclusion

Scholarships in Canada are extremely competitive since they are relatively fewer in number as compared to scholarships provided by other nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The scholarships for international students intending to study in Canada are awarded based on superior academic performance and English proficiency scores. They are also often awarded by colleges without the need for a specific application based on qualifying criteria. However, at other schools, students must apply for the same. Scholarships are often awarded at the entry level, but for certain scholarships, students must demonstrate academic distinction in later years of study as well. All the best in your pursuit.
