Approaches to Essay - SS1 English Lesson Note
Essay approaches
Writing a good essay needs planning. A lot of individuals fail because they fail to plan before writing. There are four steps you have to pass through in writing a good essay.
- Gathering ideas: This involves reading the question you have chosen. Ensure that you choose the question you can answer very well. Write all the points that come into your mind on a rough paper.
- Organize your points: You need to rearrange your points in an outline. The points should be arranged in logical order and in form of paragraphs. Your points should be so arranged as to lead to an effective conclusion.
- Developing the ideas: You are expected to develop your essay from the outline you have written. Your paragraphs must be properly developed with illustrations, experiences, and examples in order to earn a good mark. Use simple and straightforward sentences; also pay attention to punctuation and grammar.
- Revising your work: Don’t be in a hurry to submit your paper without reading over what you have written. This will enable you to detect some errors which could still be corrected.
Using these types of essays here are the approaches :
Argumentative approach: This approach is used to persuade the reader to accept a particular point of view or argument. It involves presenting evidence and reasoning to support a specific claim or thesis statement. The essay should include a clear introduction, body paragraphs that present evidence and counterarguments, and a conclusion that summarizes the main points and reiterates the thesis statement.
Descriptive approach: This approach is used to describe a particular person, place, thing, or event. The essay should use vivid language and sensory details to paint a clear picture in the reader's mind. The essay should have a clear introduction that sets the scene, body paragraphs that describe the subject, and a conclusion that sums up the key points.
Narrative approach: This approach is used to tell a story or recount an experience. The essay should have a clear introduction that sets the scene and introduces the main characters or events, body paragraphs that describe the plot and character development, and a conclusion that wraps up the story and reflects on the significance of the experience.
