What is JUPEB All About?
JUPEB is an acronym that stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board. It is an Advanced level, approved, proven, and certified examination body, that was instituted and is organized by the University of Lagos. Essentially, the curriculum is identical to the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) managed by Ahmadu Bello University. It has coordinating bodies at various tertiary universities and linked study centres around the country. The program is particularly created to give a chance to applicants who, for one reason or another, are unable to get entrance to conventional degree programs at Nigerian universities. Candidates who are awaiting results (WAEC) may also enrol.
JUPEB is a federally authorized program that is accredited by the NUC.
For students who are genuinely interested in gaining admission into their preferred university, JUPEB offers a brilliant opportunity to do so. What’s more, you are able to apply even with a pending 0-level result. The only condition is that the result will be ready before the conclusion of the JUPEB course.

What Does The JUPEB Programme Represent?
The JUPEB program offers an A-level admissions platform as well as an alternate platform for potential students to pursue university admission.
The program is specially created to be an excellent examination body. It is oriented towards conducting common, standard, and credible tests based on a world-class curriculum for students seeking Direct Entry admissions into Nigerian and foreign-based partner institutions.
Above all, it is a solution to the ever-increasing number of students demanding admission each year.
Is JUPEB an Approved Programme?
The JUPEB program has been authorized by the Federal Government as a platform for gaining admission to both Nigerian and foreign-based partner universities, through direct entrance admission.
How Guaranteed is the JUPEB Programme?
JUPEB guarantees admission success for prospective students who are eager to study and ready to put in the work and effort that will place them on the route to success. Each year, over 20,000 students apply for the program, with more than 70% securing admission at the 200 level to their selected university and degree.
To put it concisely, JUPEB ensures and simplifies your entry into the 200 level at the conclusion of your degree.
Is JUPEB a Certified Programme?
The Nigeria University Commission (NUC), Nigeria's primary administrative body in charge of universities, recognizes and authorizes the JUPEB curriculum, which is accepted by 80 per cent of the country's institutions.
The Federal Ministry of Education, which represents the Federal Government of Nigeria in matters relating to education, certifies the JUPEB programme through the NUC. Also, relevant educational institutions acknowledge and accept the program as one that provides A-level status for prospective students.
How the JUPEB Programme Works
Candidates for the JUPEB Advanced Level Examination should consult the current JAMB handbook for acceptable JUPEB subject combinations for their desired course of study at the University. For the final JUPEB exam, each JUPEB applicant must enrol in and write just three (3) subjects.

In the JUPEB program, you must complete a combination of only three subjects that are relevant to the course you have chosen.
Regardless of the course, candidates' subject combinations must be in line with their desired path of study. However, the JUPEB website has a guide for prospective students who have no idea as to the subject combination procedure in accordance with their desired course of study. They also answer any other elements you may have reservations or questions about throughout the registration process.
After completing the registration process, students will begin attending lectures in the study centre in the state they selected. This will continue throughout the program till the commencement of exams. The tutorial sessions provided at the various study centres provide students with appropriate preparation for the JUPEB exam, which will allow their entrance into 200-level programs at their selected universities.
By gaining admission into the university through the JUPEB programme, you have a higher CGPA at the end of your university programme, as your GP is going to be divided by 3 years, and not four years as with those who got in through JAMB.
What Is the Duration Of the JUPEB Programme?
The JUPEB Nigeria program lasts nine (9) months (JUPEB lectures usually start in September and ends in May, with exams starting in June), which is equivalent to an academic session at a tertiary academic institution. This is similar to enrolling in a 100-level program at a university, with the final exam serving as a gateway to the 200-level program.
JUPEB is a 9-12 month program that will provide you with a straight entrance into 200L at a university and subject of your choice.

Lectures generally begin in September and will proceed through May. The revision for the session will begin in mid-May. The exam usually commences in late May or early June and lasts three weeks. The results are then made public in late August of the same year.
Which Schools Run the JUPEB Programme?
You can find a detailed list of Nigerian universities that accept JUPEB into the 200 level here.
Most universities that recognise the JUPEB program admit students with a minimum of 6 points as long as there is no F in the result.
Advantages JUPEB Has Over JAMB And Other Programmes
- Unlike the JAMB result that expires after a year, your JUPEB result is still valid even after 10 years.
- You can use it to apply to universities over and over again
- While running the JUPEB programme, you can go ahead and apply for JAMB if you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.
- You are more likely to secure admission into the university of your choice since the number of students who apply through JUPEB is much fewer than those who apply through JAMB.
Unlike JAMB, the JUPEB certificate does not expire in a year. It is valid even after 10 years. However, it is just for admission to the university's 200L program, and can’t be used to apply for employment.
Furthermore, the JUPEB programme is gaining popularity among parents. This is because it avails their wards the opportunity to benefit from a first-hand experience of an A-level program before gaining admission into the university. To further highlight how important this is, in advanced nations, you must complete a year-long Advanced program before earning full admission to the university of choice.
Differences Between JUPEB and IJMB
Another alternative to JAMB, IJMB, has been around for quite a while now. However similar they are, it is not to be confused with JUPEB. Let's look at the differences under the following headings:
Moderation: The Ahmadu Bello University moderates IJMB, whereas the University of Lagos moderates JUPEB.
Tuition Fees: IJMB fees are significantly lower than JUPEB fees. The cost of studying for IJMB in Nigeria ranges between N70,000 in public centres and N180,000 in select private institutions, whereas the cost of studying for JUPEB in any JUPEB-accredited institution is between N255,000 and N290,000. In addition, the application fee for JUPEB is N8,750, whereas that of JUPEB costs N15,000.
Academic Calendar: IJMB examinations are held in February, whereas JUPEB exams are held in June.
Acceptability: Except for OAU, UNILAG, and a few JUPEB universities, the IJMB is accepted by all universities in Nigeria. JUPEB is accepted at all JUPEB-associated universities (see list here); for further information, see the JUPEB official website.
Final Notes
- You don’t need a JAMB/PUTME score for admission into the JUPEB programme
- Candidates who are awaiting results can also apply for the JUPEB programme
- Admission is automatic (without the need for screening)
- You’ll be expected to pay a non-refundable form fee of ₦15,000 (a bank deposit, which excludes bank charges)
If you are tired of JAMB or missing out on admission through JAMB and post-UTME, your next best option might be the JUPEB program. JUPEB has been instrumental towards helping thousands of students secure admission in the past and present. If you want to be a part of this incredible story, now is the time to register for JUPEB.
