Basins - SS1 Geography Lesson Note
A basin is a low-lying area of land, often shaped like a bowl, where water from rain, rivers, or other sources collects. It is essentially a natural depression in the Earth's surface.
Major Basins in Nigeria:
Nigeria has several major basins, including the Niger Delta Basin, Benue Trough, Chad Basin, Sokoto Basin, and the Bida Basin. The Niger Delta Basin, for example, is a vast low-lying area in the southern part of Nigeria where the Niger River empties into the Gulf of Guinea.
Uses of Basins:
Basins are crucial for various purposes, including agriculture, water supply, and energy production. Farmers often use basins to capture and store rainwater for irrigation. They can also serve as reservoirs for drinking water. Additionally, some basins, like the Niger Delta, are significant for oil and gas exploration, contributing to Nigeria's economy.
