Classification Based On Life Cycle - SS1 Biology Lesson Note

Crops can be classified based on their life cycle, which refers to the duration of time it takes for a crop to complete its growth and reproductive stages. Here are three main types of crops based on their life cycle:

1.     Annual Crops: Annual crops have a complete life cycle within a single growing season. They are typically planted, grow, flower, set seeds, and die within a year. Examples of annual crops include corn, wheat, rice, soybeans, tomatoes, and lettuce. Farmers need to replant annual crops every year.

2.     Biennial Crops: Biennial crops have a life cycle that spans two years. In the first year, biennials typically focus on vegetative growth, forming leaves and roots. They overwinter and enter a dormant phase. In the second year, they resume growth, produce flowers, set seeds, and then die. Common biennial crops include carrots, beets, onions, and some varieties of cabbage.

3.     Perennial Crops: Perennial crops have a life cycle that extends beyond two years. Once planted, they continue to grow and produce for several years, eliminating the need for replanting every year. Perennials often have a period of establishment before they reach full productivity. Examples of perennial crops include fruit trees (e.g., apple, orange), berry bushes (e.g., blueberry, raspberry), grapevines, asparagus, and some varieties of grasses used for grazing or lawns.
