Classification of colours - JSS2 Cultural and creative art Lesson Note
Colors are classified into various categories based on their properties and relationships:
Primary colors: The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. These colors are considered fundamental because they cannot be created by mixing other colors. Instead, they are used as the base for creating a wide range of other colors through mixing and blending.
Secondary colors: Green, orange, and purple are created by mixing two primary colors.
Tertiary colors: These are made by mixing a primary color with a secondary color adjacent to it on the color wheel, resulting in shades like red-orange or blue-green.
Intermediate colors: Also known as quaternary colors, these are mixtures of primary and secondary colors.
Neutral colors: These include black, white, gray, and sometimes brown, which are not associated with any particular hue.
Complementary colors: Colors opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green or blue and orange, which create high contrast and intensify each other when placed together.
Harmonious colors: Colors that are adjacent or close to each other on the color wheel, creating a sense of unity and balance.
Warm and cool colors: Warm colors like red, orange, and yellow evoke feelings of warmth and energy, while cool colors like blue, green, and purple evoke calmness and tranquility.
