Drugs are typically categorized based on their effects and mechanisms of action. They can be classified into various groups such as:
- Stimulants: These drugs increase alertness, attention, and energy. Examples include cocaine, amphetamines, and caffeine.
- Depressants: These drugs slow down brain function, inducing relaxation or sleepiness. Examples include alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids.
- Hallucinogens: These drugs alter perception, mood, and thought. Examples include LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), and MDMA (ecstasy).
- Psychotherapeutics: This category includes drugs used to treat mental health conditions such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers.
- Narcotics: These drugs relieve pain and induce sleep. Examples include opioids like morphine, codeine, and heroin.
- Inhalants: Substances that are sniffed or huffed to produce mind-altering effects. Examples include solvents, aerosols, and gases.
