Components of a Network - JSS3 Basic technology Lesson Note

  1. Routers: Devices that forward data packets between computer networks. They connect different networks together and direct traffic on the internet.
  2. Switches: Devices that connect multiple devices on a LAN and use MAC addresses to forward data to the correct destination within the network.
  3. Cables: Physical media used to connect devices in a wired network. Common types include Ethernet cables (CAT5, CAT6) and fibre optic cables.
  4. Network Interface Cards (NICs): Hardware components that connect a computer to a network, either wired or wireless.
  5. Access Points (APs): Devices that allow wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi.
