Tips for Comprhension:
An essential skill in understanding what you read is to find hidden meanings or read beyond the words. Sometimes, the author doesn't say everything directly and lets you figure out some things. For example, from the details given in the next passages, it seems like the superintendent is planning a surprise for smugglers. We'll see later that this guess is right.
Vocabulary Build up: Use a dictionary to find out what these words mean: superintendent, subordinates, wharf, contingent, contraband, agonizing, miserably, errand, crunching, bulky, silhouette, porters, cordon, pandemonium, subdued, stealth, agility.
Here are the meanings of the words:
Superintendent: A person who manages or superintends an organization or activity.
Subordinates: People under the authority or control of another within an organization.
Wharf: A level quayside area to which a ship may be moored to load and unload.
Contingent: Subject to chance or that can be anticipated to arise if a particular event occurs.
Contraband: Goods that have been imported or exported illegally.
Agonizing: Causing great physical or mental pain.
Miserably: In a wretchedly unhappy manner.
Errand: A short journey undertaken in order to deliver or collect something, especially on someone else's behalf.
Crunching: The act of crushing with the teeth, making a loud but muffled grinding sound.
Bulky: Taking up much space or heavily built.
