Computer software refers to a collection of programs, instructions, data, and documentation that enable a computer system to perform specific tasks, operations, or functions.

It encompasses both the executable programs that run on a computer and the associated data files that these programs manipulate or work with.  It is the intangible counterpart to hardware, which includes the physical components of a computer system. There are two main categories of software: system software and application software.
