Effects of nationalism in Nigeria - SS2 Government Lesson Note
Nationalism had several effects on Nigeria, and they include:
· Independence: One of the most significant effects of nationalism in Nigeria was the country's attainment of independence in 1960. This marked the end of colonial rule and the beginning of self-determination for Nigerians.
· National unity: Nationalism played a crucial role in creating a sense of national identity and unity among Nigerians. This was particularly important given the country's ethnic and religious diversity, which had the potential to create divisions.
· Political instability: However, the effects of nationalism in Nigeria were not entirely positive. The struggle for power and resources among different ethnic and regional groups led to political instability, violence, and coups.
· Regionalism: Nationalism also contributed to the emergence of regionalism in Nigeria. The country was divided into different regions, each with its own distinct culture and identity, which led to conflicts over resources and power.
· Ethnic tensions: Despite the push for national unity, nationalism also exacerbated ethnic tensions in Nigeria. Some groups felt marginalized or oppressed, leading to conflicts and violence.
