Evidence of the Earth's Sphericity - SS1 Geography Lesson Note

In simple terms, the evidence for a spherical Earth comes from observations like ships disappearing over the horizon and the shape of the Earth's shadow during lunar eclipses.

Sight of Ships: As ships sail away from the shore, they disappear bottom-up, and the mast is the last part visible. This phenomenon can be explained by the curvature of the Earth's surface.

Circumnavigation: When people travel around the Earth, they eventually end up where they started. This wouldn't be possible on a flat surface but makes sense on a spherical Earth.

Different Constellations: When you travel north or south, you can see different constellations in the night sky. This is because your line of sight is changing due to the Earth's curvature.

Earth's Shadow on the Moon: During a lunar eclipse, the Earth casts a round shadow on the Moon, which is consistent with a spherical shape.
