Expansion and Factorization of Quadratic Expressions - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note

Quadratic expressions are of the form 𝑎𝑥2+𝑏𝑥+𝑐

Expansion Example: (𝑥+2)(𝑥+5)

Using FOIL:

𝑥⋅𝑥+𝑥⋅5+2⋅𝑥+2⋅5

=𝑥2+5𝑥+2𝑥+10

=𝑥2+7𝑥+10

Factorization Example:

To factor 𝑥2+7𝑥+10:

Find factors of 10 that add up to 7 (these are 2 and 5):

Write it as (𝑥+2)(𝑥+5).
