Factors Responsible for Population Growth - JSS3 Civic education Lesson Note
- Birth Rate: The number of live births per 1,000 individuals in a population over a specified period. High birth rates contribute to population growth by increasing the overall size of the population.
- Death Rate: The number of deaths per 1,000 individuals in a population over a specified period. Low death rates, often associated with improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and nutrition, contribute to population growth by reducing mortality rates.
- Migration: The movement of individuals from one geographical area to another. Immigration, or the influx of individuals into a population, contributes to population growth, while emigration, or the outflow of individuals from a population, may slow population growth.
- Fertility Rates: The average number of children born to women of childbearing age in a population. High fertility rates contribute to population growth, particularly in regions with limited access to family planning services and education.
- Social and Cultural Factors: Societal norms, cultural practices, religious beliefs, and government policies can influence population growth by shaping attitudes towards family size, contraception, and women's empowerment.
