Farm Animals and Their Characteristics - JSS1 Agricultural science Lesson Note

1. Cattle:

   - Characteristics: Large herbivores, raised for meat (beef) and milk.

   - Breeds: Examples include Hereford, Angus, and Holstein.

2. Sheep:

   - Characteristics: Herbivores with wool-producing breeds for textiles and meat.

   - Breeds: Examples include Merino, Suffolk, and Dorset.

3. Goats:

   - Characteristics: Versatile herbivores used for meat (chevon or goat meat), milk, and fibre (cashmere or mohair).

   - Breeds: Examples include Boer, Saanen, and Angora.

4. Pigs:

   - Characteristics: Omnivores raised for pork production.

   - Breeds: Examples include Yorkshire, Duroc, and Hampshire.

5. Poultry:

   - Characteristics: Birds raised for meat (chicken, turkey) and eggs (chicken, duck).

   - Breeds: Examples include Broilers (meat chickens), Leghorns (egg-laying chickens), and Broad Breasted White (meat turkeys).

6. Rabbits:

   - Characteristics: Small mammals raised for meat (rabbit or bunny meat) and fur.

   - Breeds: Examples include New Zealand White, Flemish Giant, and Angora.
