Figure of speech : Pun and Euphemism - JSS1 English Language Lesson Note

Pun:
- Definition: A pun is a play on words that exploits the multiple meanings of a term, or words that sound similar but have different meanings.
- Example: "I'm reading a book on anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down!" Here, "put down" has a double meaning - to physically place something down and to stop reading.
- Purpose: Puns are used to create humor, add wit to language, or make a point in a clever way.
Euphemism:
- Definition: A euphemism is a mild or indirect word or expression used in place of one that may be considered harsh, blunt, or unpleasant.
- Example: Instead of saying "He died," one might say "He passed away" or "He's no longer with us."
- Purpose: Euphemisms are used to soften the impact of unpleasant or sensitive topics, to make communication more polite or politically correct, or to avoid causing offense or discomfort.

Tips to enable you Understand: 
- Pay attention to words or phrases that seem to have a double meaning or are used in a clever or unusual way.
- Look for context clues or hints that suggest a pun or euphemism is being used.
- Practice identifying puns and euphemisms in literature, advertisements, or everyday conversations.
