Grammar: Making Requests and Commands
Making Requests
Polite Requests: Use "Could you...", "Would you...", or "Can you..." to make polite requests.
For example:
- Could you pass the salt, please?
- Would you mind closing the door?
- Can you help me with this problem?
Indirect Requests: Use "I would like..." or "I want..." to make indirect requests.
For example:
- I would like a glass of water.
- I want you to listen carefully.
Requests with 'Please' : The word "please" can be used to make a request more polite. It can be used with "Will you..." or "Can you...". For example:
- Will you please take out the trash?
- Can you please turn down the music?
Making Commands
Direct Commands: Simply use the base form of the verb to give direct commands.
For example:
- Sit down.
- Be quiet.
Indirect Commands: Use "Could you..." or "Can you..." to give indirect commands.
For example:
- Could you open the window?
- Can you turn off the lights?
Positive and Negative Commands: Commands can be positive (telling someone to do something) or negative (telling someone not to do something). For example:
- Positive: Do your homework.
- Negative: Don't run in the hallway.
