Graphical Representations of Solutions for Linear Inequality in One Variable - JSS2 Mathematics Lesson Note
To graph the solution of a linear inequality in one variable on a number line:
- Draw a number line.
- Mark the critical value (the solution of the corresponding equation).
- Use an open circle for < or >, and a closed circle for ≤ or ≥.
- Shade the region where the inequality holds true.
Example 1: Graph 𝑥<2
- Draw a number line and mark the point 2.
- Use an open circle at 2 because 2 is not included.
Shade the region to the left of 2.
Example 2: Graph 𝑥≤3
- Draw a number line and mark the point 3.
- Use a closed circle at 3 because 3 is included.
- Shade the region to the left of 3.
