Jesus teaching on worrying and anxiety (Matt 6:25-34) - JSS2 Christian Religious Studies Lesson Note

One of the demands of God’s kingdom is that you should not worry about money and the things that money can buy. You should not be anxious about your health, food, clothes, shelter and your education:

“Therefore, I telll you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on.”

You shall not worry because life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. God takes care of birds and plants and He will look after us because you are of more value to Him than those things. The birds of the air do not sow anything or harvest anything, yet God provides for them. The flowers of the field also do not do anything to make themselves beautiful that the famous King Solomon with all his beautiful dresses could not match the beauty of the lilies of the field.

If God takes so much care of lower creatures such as ordinary birds and ordinary flowers, He will take greater care of you. Therefore, you are not to worry about material things. No amount of worry can solve your problems for you. When you worry it only only shows that you have no faith and trust in God. Hence we should not worry about the future:

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”

Instead of worrying about your material needs, you should put your trust in God by seeking spiritual virtues and all other things will be given to you:

“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

This means that you are to place yourself under the total rule of God by obeying His commandments as revealed to us by Jesus Christ. When you do His will, then you can trust Him to provide all your needs. Hence we should not worry about the future.
