Land Preparation (Pre-planting and Planting Operations): - SS1 Agriculture Lesson Note
Pre-planting Operations:
Clearing: The first step involves clearing the land of any vegetation, stumps, or debris to create a clean planting area.
Plowing and Tilling: The soil is plowed and tilled to break it up and improve aeration, making it easier for the crop's roots to penetrate.
Leveling: The land is leveled to ensure even water distribution during irrigation and to prevent waterlogging.
Weed Control: Weeds are controlled either manually or through the use of herbicides to reduce competition with the oil crops.
Planting Operations:
Spacing and Depth: Proper spacing and planting depth are crucial for each crop. For instance, oil palm seedlings are planted with adequate spacing to allow for canopy development.
Planting Techniques: Different crops may require specific planting techniques. Melon, for example, can be direct-seeded or transplanted as seedlings.
Mulching: Mulching is often used to conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth.
