a. Events in a Decathlon
A decathlon includes ten events that are spread over two days. Here are the events in the order they are usually contested:
Day 1:
100 meters - A short sprint to test speed.
Long jump - Athletes jump as far as they can from a running start.
Shot put - A heavy ball is thrown for distance.
High jump - Athletes jump over a bar set at increasing heights.
400 meters - A one-lap race around the track.
Day 2:
6. 110 meters hurdles - A sprint race with hurdles to jump over.
Discus throw - A heavy disc is thrown for distance.
Pole vault - Athletes use a pole to jump over a high bar.
Javelin throw - A spear-like object is thrown for distance.
1500 meters - A middle-distance race, testing endurance.
b. Events in a Pentathlon
The pentathlon can vary between different types, such as the modern pentathlon and the traditional track and field pentathlon. Here we’ll cover the traditional track and field version.
Women’s Outdoor Pentathlon (commonly used in historical contexts or some specific competitions):
100 meters hurdles - A sprint race with hurdles.
Shot put - A heavy ball is thrown for distance.
High jump - Athletes jump over a bar.
Long jump - Athletes jump as far as they can.
800 meters - A middle-distance race.
Indoor Pentathlon (used in indoor athletics):
60 meters hurdles - A shorter sprint race with hurdles.
High jump - Jumping over a bar.
Shot put - Throwing a heavy ball.
Long jump - Jumping for distance.
800 meters - Middle-distance running race.
The modern pentathlon is a bit different and includes:
Fencing - One-touch épée fencing.
Swimming - A 200-meter freestyle swim.
Equestrian show jumping - Riding an unfamiliar horse over a course with obstacles.
Shooting - Using a pistol in combination with running.
Running - A cross-country run (combined with the shooting event in a format called "laser-run").
