Consonant Contrast

/p/ vs. /f/:

/p/: This sound is produced by closing the lips together and releasing a puff of air (e.g., "pat").

/f/: This sound is produced by placing the upper teeth against the lower lip and releasing air (e.g., "fat").

/p/: Voiceless bilabial plosive (e.g., “pat,” “top”).

/f/: Voiceless labiodental fricative (e.g., “fan,” “leaf”).

/ʒ/ vs. /ʃ/:

/ʒ/: This sound is produced by placing the middle of the tongue near the roof of the mouth, creating a voiced sound (e.g., "measure").

/ʃ/: This sound is produced by placing the middle of the tongue near the roof of the mouth, creating a voiceless sound (e.g., "shoes").

/ʒ/: Voiced postalveolar fricative (e.g., “measure,” “treasure”).

/ʃ/: Voiceless postalveolar fricative (e.g., “shoe,” “sure”).

/t/ vs. /θ/:

/t/: This sound is produced by placing the tongue against the alveolar ridge and releasing air (e.g., "ten").

/θ/: This sound is produced by placing the tongue against the upper teeth and releasing air (e.g., "thin").

/t/: Voiceless alveolar plosive (e.g., “top,” “cat”).

/θ/: Voiceless dental fricative (e.g., “think,” “bath”).

/l/ vs. /r/:

/l/: This sound is produced by placing the tongue against the alveolar ridge, with the sides of the tongue lowered (e.g., "lamp").

/r/: This sound is produced by curling the tongue back or bunching it up in the middle of the mouth (e.g., "ramp").

/l/: Voiced alveolar lateral approximant (e.g., “light,” “bell”).

/r/: Voiced alveolar tap or trill (e.g., “red,” “car”).

/s/ vs. /θ/:

/s/: This sound is produced by placing the tongue close to the alveolar ridge and releasing air (e.g., "sip").

/θ/: This sound is produced by placing the tongue against the upper teeth and releasing air (e.g., "thin").

/s/: Voiceless alveolar fricative (e.g., “sun,” “bus”).

/θ/: Voiceless dental fricative (e.g., “think,” “math”).

/ʃ/ vs. /tʃ/:

/ʃ/: This sound is produced by placing the middle of the tongue near the roof of the mouth, creating a voiceless sound (e.g., "shoe").

/tʃ/: This sound is produced by combining the /t/ sound and the /ʃ/ sound, resulting in a ch sound (e.g., "chip").

/ʃ/: Voiceless postalveolar fricative (e.g., “shoe,” “nation”).

/tʃ/: Voiceless postalveolar affricate (e.g., “church,” “watch”).
