Manuring and Fertilizer Application - SS1 Agriculture Lesson Note
Yam:
Yam benefits from organic matter-rich soils. Incorporating well-rotted compost or manure into the soil during land preparation can provide essential nutrients and improve soil fertility.
If soil tests indicate nutrient deficiencies, you can apply balanced fertilizers with a ratio like 14-14-14 or 10-10-10 to provide nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Follow recommended application rates.
Fertilizer application should be done in a way that minimizes direct contact with the yam tubers to prevent burning or damage to the crop
Cassava:
Cassava is relatively low in nutrient requirements compared to other crops, but it still benefits from adequate nutrients for optimal growth.
Organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can be applied during land preparation to improve soil fertility.
If needed, you can apply balanced fertilizers, but it's important not to over-fertilize, as excessive nitrogen can lead to excessive vegetative growth and lower root yields.
Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes require a moderate amount of nutrients for optimal growth.
Similar to yam and cassava, organic matter can be added to the soil during land preparation to improve fertility.
Balanced fertilizers can be used, with slightly higher emphasis on potassium (K) for sweet potatoes. A fertilizer with a ratio like 10-20-20 is suitable.
