Manuring and Fertilizer Requirements - SS1 Agriculture Lesson Note
1. Groundnut (Peanut):
Groundnut is a leguminous crop, capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen with the help of rhizobia bacteria in its root nodules. Hence, it has relatively low nitrogen fertilizer requirements.
Phosphorus and potassium are essential for groundnut growth. Soil tests should be conducted to determine the specific nutrient needs and appropriate fertilization rates.
Organic matter, such as well-rotted compost, can improve soil fertility and water-holding capacity.
2. Cowpea:
Similar to groundnut, cowpea can also fix atmospheric nitrogen through its symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. Therefore, it requires minimal nitrogen fertilizer.
Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers may be needed depending on soil test results.
Organic matter incorporation can enhance soil fertility and nutrient retention.
