Meaning and Identification of Fractions - JSS1 Mathematics Lesson Note

Meaning of Fractions:

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written in the form of a/b

 , where:

a (the numerator) represents how many parts we have.

b (the denominator) represents the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.

Examples:  

1/2

 : This fraction means one part out of two equal parts, or half of something.

 

3/4

 : This fraction means three parts out of four equal parts, or three-quarters of something.

 

5/8

 : This fraction means five parts out of eight equal parts

 

Identification of Fractions:

To identify fractions, look for two numbers separated by a slash, where the first number is the numerator and the second number is the denominator.
