Merits and demerits of Hugh Clifford's Constitution of 1922 - SS2 Government Lesson Note

The Constitution of 1922 marked an important moment in Nigeria's political development, as it established a framework for the colonial government to operate within. While it provided some political representation for Nigerians, it was criticized by some for not providing enough power to local communities and for maintaining control over important areas such as defense and foreign affairs.

Merits of Hugh Clifford's Constitution of 1922:

·         Established a framework for the colonial government to operate within.

·         Created a central legislative council that made laws that applied to the entire country.

·         Established a separation of powers between the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of government.

·         Provided limited political representation for Nigerians.

·         Paved the way for future reforms and progress towards independence.

 

Demerits of Hugh Clifford's Constitution of 1922:

·         It did not provide enough political power to local communities.

·         The regional councils had limited powers compared to the central legislative council.

·         The appointed members of the central legislative council still represented the British colonial government.

·         The Governor-General was appointed by the British monarch and represented the interests of the British colonial government.

·         It allowed the British colonial government to maintain control over important areas such as defense and foreign affairs.
