Methods of refuse disposal - JSS3 Physical and health education Lesson Note

Landfill: This is where trash is buried in layers in designated areas of land. As the trash decomposes, it produces gases like methane, which can be captured and used as a source of energy.

Incineration: Trash is burned at high temperatures in specialized facilities called incinerators. This reduces the volume of waste and produces energy in the form of heat or electricity. However, it can also release pollutants into the air if not properly controlled.

Recycling: This involves sorting and processing materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal to be reused in manufacturing new products. Recycling helps conserve resources and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills or incinerators.

Composting: Organic waste like food scraps and yard trimmings can be collected and allowed to decompose naturally in a controlled environment. The resulting compost can be used as a nutrient-rich soil amendment for gardening and agriculture.
