Military rule in Nigeria 1975 – 1979 - SS3 Government Lesson Note
Military rule in Nigeria from 1975 to 1979 was marked by efforts to restore civilian rule and economic recovery after a decade of political instability and economic decline. General Murtala Mohammed had taken over in a bloodless coup in 1975, promising to restore democracy and end corruption. However, he was assassinated in a failed coup attempt in 1976, and was succeeded by his deputy, General Olusegun Obasanjo.
Under Obasanjo's leadership, the military government introduced a new constitution, which provided for a presidential system of government and a two-party system. The military government also initiated economic reforms aimed at addressing the country's economic problems, including inflation, unemployment, and a large external debt.
In 1979, the military government handed over power to a civilian government, following elections that were conducted under a new constitution. The elections were won by Shehu Shagari, a former minister in the civilian government that was overthrown in 1966.
