Military rule in Nigeria 1983 – 1985 - SS3 Government Lesson Note
Military rule in Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 was marked by a return to authoritarianism, political repression, and economic instability. In December 1983, a military coup led by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari, who had been elected in 1979.
Buhari's military government promised to fight corruption, indiscipline, and restore economic stability. However, it was marked by human rights abuses, suppression of the press, and a crackdown on political opponents. The government introduced a harsh system of punishment for offenses such as corruption, and implemented a policy of austerity that caused hardship for many Nigerians.
In August 1985, Buhari was overthrown in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida, who promised to restore democracy and return the country to civilian rule. However, Babangida's government was marked by political instability, economic decline, and a lack of progress towards restoring democracy.
