Military rule in Nigeria 1993 – 1999 - SS3 Government Lesson Note
The period of military rule in Nigeria from 1993 to 1999 was marked by political instability, human rights abuses, and economic decline. In 1993, a presidential election was held, but the military government annulled the results, leading to widespread protests and political unrest. General Sani Abacha seized power later that year and ruled with an iron fist, suppressing dissent and cracking down on opposition groups.
Abacha's regime was marked by allegations of corruption and human rights abuses, including the execution of activists and journalists. In 1998, Abacha died suddenly and was succeeded by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who promised to return the country to civilian rule.
Abubakar kept his promise and organized elections in 1999 that led to the election of Olusegun Obasanjo as president, ending military rule in Nigeria. However, the legacy of military rule continued to shape Nigerian politics and society for years to come
