Mode of formation - SS1 Geography Lesson Note

Mode of Formation:

  • Igneous Rocks: These rocks form from the cooling and solidification of molten material called magma or lava. They can be found both beneath the Earth's surface (intrusive) and on the surface (extrusive). Examples include granite and basalt.

  • Sedimentary Rocks: Sedimentary rocks are created through the accumulation and compression of particles like sand, mud, and organic material over time. They often contain fossils and provide insights into Earth's history. Examples include limestone and sandstone.

  • Metamorphic Rocks: Metamorphic rocks result from the alteration of pre-existing rocks due to heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids. This process is called metamorphism and can change the mineral composition and texture of the original rocks. Examples include marble and schist.
