Murmuring in the early church (Acts 6:1-2) - JSS3 Christian Religious Studies Lesson Note
The case of murmuring came up in the early church because of some partialities being played in food distribution. The Hellenists Jews murmured against the Hebrews on their daily mode of food distribution. At that stage in church development, the population of the members of the church had increased tremendously that seeing food to feed (cater) the teaming population was a difficult task and the food sharers whom the majority are the Hebrews started denying the widows of the Hellenists food and some other material things and when the Hellenists realized that, they cried to the twelve disciples and the disciples reasoned that they cannot leave their work of preaching to come to the table to share food for the people. They therefore resolved to appoint deacons to take charge of the food distribution to the widows of the Hellenists to avoid complaints. Hence, the appointment of the seven deacons, chaired by Stephen, to facilitate equitable distribution of food and other material things to all and sundry in the church.
