Names of God in different languages - JSS1 Christian Religious Studies Lesson Note
In the Traditional religion, all the various tribes have their own names for God. For example, the Yoruba call God Olodumare. The Igbo call God: Chineke and the Hausa call God Ubangiji. The names tell us that God is the Supreme Being, the source of all life in heaven, and on earth. Some Nigerian names for God in African Traditional Religions.
BIROM:
i. Dagwi - Father of the sun; source of beings
ii. Edo Osanobuwa - The source of all beings and sustainer of the world.
iii. Osa-Nakpame - God, the great Artist, Molder, Creator
iv. Osa-NudaziThe - Impregnable Lord
v. Efiki –Abasi - The God who directs the Universe from Heaven.
Hausa/Fulani:
i. Ubangiji - The Almighty God. The Supreme Being.
Igbo:
i. Chineke- God the Creator
ii. Chukwu - The great spirit, Source of beings
iii. Obasi-di-n’elu - God above
iv. Chukwu - The Great Spirit
v. Onyeokike - The Creator of all
vi. Olisabuluwa - The immense, sustainer of the world.
vii. Eze-enu - King of Heaven
Ijaw:
i. Egbesu - The Supreme protector
ii. Temearau - He, who is Almighty.
iii. Ayiba - Maker of Soul, the Creator
iv. Nupe Soko - The Creator, Owner of the world. The Great God.
TIV:
i. Anodos - The Sustainer
ii. Urhobo - Oghene - God, Lord of all
iii. Uku - The Great one
iv. Orhorwara - The feared One
v. Omanomohowo - The Creator, the Molder
vi. Out nyo - The One who the multitude must hear when He
